Cedar (Virginian)

Essential Oil

Juniperus virginiana

Origin: Eastern North America, primarily United States

About

Virginian Cedarwood essential oil is a warm, slightly sweet, balsamic oil with a drier, more pencil-shaving character compared to its Atlas counterpart. It is clear to pale yellow in colour and blends well into massage oils for grounding, calming treatments. It is particularly valued in massage for respiratory support, stress relief, and skin conditioning work.

Cedar (Virginian), also known as Eastern Red Cedar, has been used by Native American peoples for centuries in purification ceremonies, as a medicinal remedy, and for its insect-repelling properties. Early European settlers adopted its use for chest complaints and skin conditions. Its aromatic wood and oil have long been valued in perfumery and traditional medicine throughout North America.

Benefits

  • Mild astringent and toning effect on oily or congested skin
  • Natural insect-repelling properties useful in outdoor massage settings

  • Traditionally used to support urinary tract health

Pairings (59)

Caution
Clove Bud

Clove Bud is a known skin sensitiser and its potent spice may overwhelm Cedarwood's subtler character — use with great care at low dilution.

Caution
Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a potential skin sensitiser and its sharp, grassy scent can conflict with Cedarwood's warm woodiness — blend carefully at low ratios.

Caution
Neem

Neem's very strong sulphurous aroma is likely to overpower Cedarwood and may create an unpleasant blend — use only in very small ratios if at all.

Caution
Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang's intensely floral character can easily overpower Cedarwood's woody subtlety — use at very low ratios and with care to avoid headache.
