St John's Wort
Carrier OilHypericum perforatum
Origin: Europe (particularly Mediterranean and Central Europe)
About
St John's Wort carrier oil is an infused oil, typically made by macerating Hypericum perforatum flowers in a base oil such as olive or sunflower, giving it a distinctive deep red colour from the hypericin content. It has a medium-to-heavy texture with a characteristic herbaceous, slightly resinous aroma and leaves a mild residue on the skin. It is particularly valued in massage therapy for nerve pain, bruising, muscular tension, and inflammatory conditions along nerve pathways such as sciatica.
St John's Wort oil has been used medicinally since ancient Greek times, with Hippocrates and Dioscorides documenting its wound-healing and nerve-soothing properties. It was traditionally harvested around the feast of St John the Baptist (June 24th), when the plant is in full bloom, and was used by herbalists across Europe to treat bruises, burns, and nerve pain. During the medieval period it was also employed as a protective herb, hung in doorways to ward off evil, and its bright red infused oil was considered a powerful healing remedy.
