Patchouli

Essential Oil

Pogostemon cablin

Origin: Indonesia, India, Philippines

About

A deep, complex, earthy base note oil that improves significantly with age. It has grounding, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties and is one of the best skin-regenerating essential oils. Its exceptionally complex aroma makes it both a therapeutic tool and a perfumery anchor.

Used in India and Malaysia for centuries to repel insects from stored fabrics and to scent textiles traded along the Silk Road, patchouli was a signifier of authentic Indian goods. The oil became synonymous with the 1960s counterculture movement and remains one of the most recognisable perfumery materials.

Benefits

  • Deeply grounding and earthy
  • Anti-inflammatory and antifungal
  • Excellent for skin regeneration and scarring

Caution
Lemongrass

Patchouli's deep, heavy earthiness can overwhelm lemongrass's bright citrus note; precise ratios are needed to maintain balance.

Caution
Rosemary

Patchouli's heavy, earthy sweetness clashes significantly with rosemary's fresh, sharp aroma, creating an unbalanced and often unpleasant blended scent.

Caution
Tea Tree

Patchouli's heavy, earthy aroma tends to dominate and clash with Tea Tree's clean, medicinal character; careful proportion testing is needed.

Excellent
Cardamom

Patchouli's deep, earthy, musky warmth complements cardamom's spicy sweetness superbly, creating a grounding and sensual aromatic blend.

Excellent
Sandalwood
