Spearmint

Essential Oil

Mentha spicata

Origin: Mediterranean, introduced globally

About

A gentler, sweeter alternative to peppermint with similar cooling and digestive properties but without the intensity of menthol. It is suitable for use with children (unlike peppermint), provides mild cooling for massage, and is a valuable companion in digestive and refreshing blends.

The older and gentler sibling of peppermint, spearmint has been used medicinally since ancient Greece. It was used extensively by the Romans who brought it throughout the Roman Empire. Spearmint contains carvone rather than menthol, giving it a sweeter, less intense character.

Benefits

  • Gentler cooling alternative to peppermint
  • Digestive support and anti-nausea
  • Safe for children over 6 in appropriate dilution
  • Refreshing and mentally stimulating
  • Antimicrobial properties

Pairings (27)

Caution
Basil ct. linalool

Spearmint's strong minty character can compete aromatically with basil ct. linalool and combined application requires careful dilution monitoring.

Caution
Basil ct. methylchavicol

The strong minty note competes aromatically and the combined stimulating character may be too intense for sensitive individuals.

Caution
Agarwood

Spearmint's sweet, minty brightness is aromatically mismatched with Agarwood's dark, resinous warmth and risks disrupting the overall blend intention.

Caution
Peppermint

Both contain menthol-family compounds; combining them at full dilution creates a cumulative mint intensity that can be overwhelming and cause tingling or irritation on sensitive skin.

Caution
Cardamom

Like peppermint, spearmint's cooling nature conflicts with cardamom's warming action, creating therapeutic opposition, though the intensity is somewhat milder.

Caution
Bergamot

Spearmint's minty freshness can compete with bergamot's citrus profile and requires careful proportioning to avoid an unbalanced aroma.

Caution
Rose Otto

Spearmint's minty freshness clashes with Rose Otto's floral richness and the combination is rarely therapeutically or aromatically harmonious.

Caution
Neem

Spearmint carries sensitisation risk and its light minty aroma clashes unpleasantly with neem's pungent sulfurous character in most formulations.

Caution
Clove Bud

Spearmint introduces competing menthol-type sensations alongside Clove Bud's warmth, and the combined sensitisation profile warrants caution.

Caution
Pomegranate Seed

Spearmint, while gentler than peppermint, still carries mild sensitisation potential and its cool, fresh aroma may compete with pomegranate seed's earthy character.

Caution
Cedar (Atlas)

Spearmint's fresh, sweet mintiness contrasts sharply with Cedar's warm woody depth and may create an unbalanced, competing aroma profile.

Caution
Rosehip Seed

Spearmint may cause mild sensitisation on delicate facial skin and its sharp aroma competes with rosehip's subtle earthy character.

Caution
Black Pepper

Spearmint introduces a cooling contrast to black pepper's heat which may be therapeutically conflicting and aromatically challenging to balance.

Caution
Clary Sage

Spearmint's bright minty character competes aromatically with clary sage and its mildly stimulating nature works against clary sage's sedative effect.

Caution
Cypress

Spearmint adds cooling intensity that can compete with cypress; the combination may be overwhelming and should be used sparingly.

Caution
Sandalwood

Spearmint's cooling, fresh mint aroma competes with sandalwood's warm, creamy character and may disrupt blend harmony.

Excellent
Lavender

Spearmint's gentle cooling freshness pairs beautifully with lavender's calming properties, creating an approachable, balanced blend suitable for most people.
